A proper Northumberland photography adventure
Northumberland is made for landscape photography: long beaches, tidal islands, fishing villages, rugged headlands and castles rising straight out of the coast. This five-day residential workshop gives us time to work with changing tides, weather and light instead of racing through a fixed checklist of locations.
I keep these trips deliberately small. With only four guests, everyone gets proper tuition and enough room to work. I will take care of the driving between locations in my van and adapt the plan around the most promising conditions, leaving you free to concentrate on your photography.
Likely locations
The final itinerary will depend on the weather, tides and access conditions, but likely locations include:
• Bamburgh Beach and Bamburgh Castle
• Craster, Embleton Bay and views towards Dunstanburgh Castle
• Holy Island and Lindisfarne when the safe causeway times suit the light
• Howick and the rocky coastline around Rumbling Kern
• Alnmouth and its tidal estuary
• An inland viewpoint towards the Cheviot Hills when conditions favour it
These are possibilities rather than a rigid promise. The advantage of a small residential trip is that we can go where the light and weather are working best.
How the week will work
Monday: travel north, arrive during the afternoon, settle into the accommodation and head out for our first evening shoot.
Tuesday to Thursday: sunrise, coastal and landscape sessions planned around the tides and forecast, with breaks for meals. On whichever day best suits the weather, we will spend roughly half a day back at the accommodation editing and making prints before heading out again for the later light.
Friday: a final early session, breakfast, check-out and the journey home.
This is a working outline rather than a timetable that forces us to stay in the wrong place when the best light is happening somewhere else.
From capture to print with PermaJet
I am proud to be a PermaJet Brand Ambassador. Printing became an important part of my own practice while I was studying photography in 2013, and I still think it is the final, too-often-overlooked stage of making a photograph.
During our half-day session we will select and edit photographs from the trip, look at colour, soft proofing and print preparation, and compare how surface, texture and paper tone can change the feel of an image. I will bring a selection of PermaJet photographic and fine-art papers so we can make informed choices rather than printing everything on the same stock.
The session will be practical and relaxed. We will aim for everyone to leave with a finished print made during the workshop.
Accommodation and food
We will stay together in a comfortable private house positioned to give us sensible access to the coast. Every guest will have their own private bedroom.
Breakfasts, packed lunches, evening meals, tea, coffee, water and planned snacks are included. Meals will be arranged around the photography schedule using the accommodation and local cafés or pubs. Alcoholic drinks are not included.
I’ll contact everyone before the trip to collect dietary requirements. Please contact me before booking if you have a severe allergy or a requirement that may need specialist preparation, so I can confirm what can be accommodated safely.
Getting there from Norwich
If you are travelling from Norfolk, you are welcome to leave your car at my Norwich address and travel with me in the van to Northumberland and back again. I will also drive the group between workshop locations throughout the trip.
This is optional. If you would rather make your own way to the accommodation or use your own vehicle during the trip, that is absolutely fine. The exact Norwich meeting address and departure details will be sent privately to booked guests.
Who this workshop is for
This trip is best suited to photographers who are already comfortable with the basic relationship between aperture, shutter speed and ISO. You do not need to be an expert. I will help with composition, exposure, filters, long exposures and responding to difficult conditions.
Some locations involve walking over sand, dunes, grass and uneven coastal paths while carrying equipment. The Craster approach towards Dunstanburgh is approximately 1.3 miles each way. The route and pace will be adapted sensibly, but guests should be comfortable with this general level of activity.
What is included
• Four nights’ accommodation in a private room
• Breakfasts, packed lunches and evening meals
• Tea, coffee, water and planned snacks
• Small-group tuition throughout the workshop
• Optional return transport from my Norwich address to Northumberland
• Transport between workshop locations
• A practical editing and fine-art printing session
• Use of PermaJet photographic and fine-art papers during the printing session
• Loan of a tripod and landscape filters if requested in advance
• Charging facilities for camera and drone batteries in the van
What is not included
• Alcoholic drinks or additional food and drinks outside the planned meals
• Travel to and from my Norwich address if you use the included lift option
• Admission, parking or boat costs unless expressly listed as included
• Personal, travel and camera-equipment insurance
• Suitable breakdown cover if you choose to use your own vehicle
Weather, tides and flexibility
Northumberland’s coast is exposed, and the weather is part of the experience. Locations, timings and the day of the indoor editing and printing session may change so that we can make the best of the conditions and keep the group safe.
Any visit to Holy Island will depend on the published safe causeway crossing times and the conditions on the day. It will only be included when it works safely within the workshop plan.

Five days, just three guests, one van, and a corner of North Wales at its wildest, most atmospheric time of year.
At a glance:
Dates: 23rd to 27th November 2026 (five days)
Price: £675 per person (£275 deposit to secure your place)
Group size: just 3
Level: some experience needed, comfortable shooting in manual
Getting there: meet us at the accommodationThis is a residential landscape photography workshop through Snowdonia and Anglesey in late November, the season when the summer crowds have thinned, the light turns moody and cinematic, and the Welsh coast starts throwing everything it's got at you. Wave-battered sea stacks, mist rolling off the mountains, lighthouses standing firm against the weather. It's the kind of drama you simply don't get on a calm summer's evening. And you won't be chasing it alone. With a group of just three, I'll be right beside you at every location, helping you read the light, find your composition and nail your settings, while I take care of everything else: the driving, the accommodation, the timings, the where and the when. You just bring your camera and your curiosity.
just 3 places, and here's why
I keep these trips deliberately small. Three guests means everyone gets proper, personal attention, nobody's jostling for space at the good spots, and, practically, you all fit in my van, so we can travel together between workshop locations. The van's kitted out too: there's 240V mains power on board, so if your batteries start running low through the day you can top them straight back up, which is a real lifesaver for drone batteries especially, and I've got a camping stove in the back for tea and coffee, so there's always a hot brew on the go between shoots. No convoy, no getting lost, no white-knuckle drives down unfamiliar lanes at 5 am. You turn up, hop in, and shoot.
Who this trip is for
This one's a step up from my day workshops. It's for photographers who've got the basics under their belt, a working understanding of the exposure triangle (aperture, shutter speed and ISO) and how to shoot in manual. If you're comfortable there, you're ready. Everything beyond that, including composition, filters, long exposures, reading the conditions and editing back at base, is exactly what we'll build on together over the five days.(Brand new to your camera? My one-day workshops are the better place to start; drop me a line, and I'll point you the right way.)
Where we'll shoot
Snowdonia and Anglesey are ridiculously good for landscape photography: dramatic mountains, sweeping valleys, abandoned slate quarries, rugged coastline, lighthouses and sea stacks, all within reach. Over the five days we'll work a mix of mountain and coastal locations. Likely spots include South Stack Lighthouse, the Trefor Sea Stacks and some of the classic Snowdonia viewpoints. Snowdonia still draws its share of hill walkers year-round, but late November is noticeably quieter than peak season, so we'll usually have more room to work and a more relaxed experience all round. The exact locations flex with the conditions. My job is to put you in the best spot for the best light on the day, not to stick rigidly to a plan when something better is happening over the next ridge.
A typical day
Monday: Arrive and check in, head out for a sunset shoot, then dinner together.Tuesday to Thursday: Up for sunrise, shooting the best locations through the day, back for breakfast or a stop en route, then out again through to sunset, with a relaxed evening meal option back at the accommodation. There's also the chance to sit down with a brew and go through your photos on the sofa if you fancy it. Nothing formal, just a relaxed bit of editing time if you'd like some pointers.Friday: One last sunrise shoot, then check out and head home.Sunrise to sunset, we'll chase the light, but at a friendly, unhurried pace, with plenty of time to actually enjoy where you are.
Where you'll stay
You'll have your own private room in a comfortable private house, ideally located to keep driving distances short from sunrise to sunset rather than relying on a hotel miles from the locations. A light breakfast is provided each morning: cereal, toast and jam, orange juice, tea and coffee, to set you up before a sunrise start. Lunches and dinners aren't included, which keeps the price down and the days flexible. Most evenings we'll have the option to eat back at base to keep things relaxed and costs sensible, or head out if the group fancies it. We decide as we go.
Transport
Transport
between workshop locations and fuel are included in my five-seat van. You are also welcome to use your own vehicle throughout if you prefer.
What's included
Accommodation with your own private roomLight breakfast each morningAll transport throughout the workshopLoan of landscape filters and a tripod if you need themHands-on, personal photography tuition from start to finish
What's not included
Lunches, dinners, meals out, snacks and drinks; travel to the start location if you're not travelling with me; and your own personal, travel and camera-equipment insurance, plus breakdown cover for your own vehicle if you choose to drive yourself.
A bit about me
I'm a full-time landscape photographer based in Norfolk, with a BA and a Master's degree in photography, and I've been running workshops since 2013. I work with PermaJet, Kase Filters, F-Stop Gear, Leofoto and South West Optics. I've won and been shortlisted for several awards, and my images have featured in publications and exhibitions. But honestly, what people tend to remember from these trips isn't the CV; it's the relaxed, no-pressure, no-egos atmosphere, and coming home with photographs they're genuinely proud of.
What about the weather?
Let's be honest, it's North Wales in November, and the weather will play its part. That's the point. Wild waves, dramatic skies and fast-changing, atmospheric conditions are exactly what make these images special, and we'll get out and make the most of them. Wales is a big place, so there's always a Plan B and a Plan C. If one spot isn't working, we move to where it is. The only time we'll change tack completely is a genuine severe weather warning, where safety always comes first, with dynamic risk assessments throughout.
Fitness & what to expect
You'll want to be generally fit; the furthest walk from the van is around 40 minutes, with some uphill, though always at a slow, steady pace. Some locations involve uneven paths, coastal terrain and working near cliffs or exposed spots, so sturdy footwear and proper all-weather clothing are essential.

Group size: just 4

Getting there: a return lift from Norwich is available by prior arrangement. Otherwise, meet us at the accommodation.
This residential landscape photography workshop explores one of the UK’s most dramatic stretches of coastline, where rugged cliffs, sea stacks, folded rock formations and wild beaches run from North Devon into North Cornwall. Based around Bude, we are well placed to work on both sides of the border.
February brings low winter light, big skies and powerful Atlantic seas. It is exactly the sort of weather that can produce atmospheric photographs.
Why the group is limited to four
I keep these trips deliberately small so everybody receives proper personal attention and has room to work at the best viewpoints. Four guests also fit comfortably in my five-seat van for travel between locations.
Who this trip is for
This trip suits photographers who understand the exposure triangle and are comfortable shooting in manual. We will build on that with composition, filters, long exposures, reading conditions and optional editing support back at the accommodation.
If you are completely new to your camera, one of my day workshops is a better place to start. Use the contact page if you would like help choosing.

A typical day

Six days, just four guests, one van, and the beautiful Moray Coast with the Cairngorms on our doorstep.
At a glance:
Dates: 15th to 20th March 2027 (six days)
Price: £1,195 per person (£350 deposit to secure your place)
Group size: just 4
Level: some experience needed, comfortable shooting in manual
Getting there: collection from Inverness or a nearby railway station is available by prior arrangementThis is a residential landscape photography workshop through one of Scotland's most wonderfully varied corners. Rugged coastline, harbours, sea stacks and lighthouses along the Moray Coast, with the option to head inland to the Cairngorms, Dava Moor and the open moorland beyond. Six days gives us proper time to build a genuinely varied set of images: coastal light one day, mountains and moorland the next.March in Scotland means quiet locations as not even the midges are out, low light and real atmosphere, with a good chance of dramatic, changeable conditions and even snow on the higher ground.

Where we'll shoot
The Moray Coast offers a brilliant mix of seascape, landscape and characterful coastal locations, beaches, harbours, cliffs, sea stacks, lighthouses and smaller coastal details. Depending on the weather and how the week's shaping up, we may also head inland towards the Cairngorms and Dava Moor, opening things up to moorland, woodland, rivers and big mountain backdrops. One day will likely see us push further east along the coast towards Rattray Head Lighthouse, with the chance to take in one of the castles along the North Aberdeenshire coastline too, adding a different flavour again to the mix. It's this variety, coast, castle, mountain and moor, that makes the trip so rewarding.March is a genuinely brilliant time for this part of Scotland, quieter locations, low light, changeable conditions and plenty of atmosphere. As always, exact locations are chosen around the weather, light, wind direction and road conditions, not a fixed plan.
A typical day
Monday: Meet and greet early afternoon, check in, head out for a sunset shoot, then a dinner outing or food stop depending on timing.Tuesday to Friday: Up for sunrise, shooting through the day, back for breakfast or a stop en route depending on conditions, then out again through to sunset, likely including a day pushing further east towards Rattray Head and the Aberdeenshire coast. Evenings bring the option to eat back at the accommodation, relaxed and unhurried.Saturday: One last sunrise shoot, then check out and head home.Sunrise to sunset, we'll chase the light, but at a friendly, unhurried pace, with plenty of time to actually take it all in.
Where you'll stay
You'll have your own private room in well-located accommodation, chosen to give us good access to the Moray Coast while keeping the Cairngorms, Dava Moor and the surrounding area within easy reach. This is best suited to photographers with a basic understanding of aperture, shutter speed and ISO. You do not need to be an expert. I’ll help with composition, exposure, filters, long exposures and making practical decisions as the light and weather change.
How the trip runs
We’ll meet around midday on Monday, check in and head out for our first afternoon and sunset shoot. Tuesday and Wednesday are full workshop days, planned around the weather and the best available light. Thursday gives us a final day of photography before the trip finishes after the last shoot.
The pace is relaxed, but we’ll make the most of the short November days. Exact locations are chosen around light, weather, access and safety.
Accommodation, food and travel
Accommodation is included, with each guest having a private room. Breakfasts, packed lunches, evening meals, tea, coffee, water and planned snacks are included throughout the trip. Meals will be arranged around the photography schedule using the accommodation and local cafés or pubs. We expect to use the Yorkshire Bridge Inn when the itinerary and opening hours allow. Alcoholic drinks are not included.
I’ll contact everyone before the trip to collect dietary requirements. Please contact me before booking if you have a severe allergy or a requirement that may need specialist preparation, so I can confirm what can be accommodated safely.
Transport between workshop locations and fuel are included in my five-seat van. A return lift from Norwich may be available by prior arrangement; otherwise, meet us at the accommodation.

What to bring
Bring a DSLR or mirrorless camera, spare batteries and memory cards, a useful range of lenses, a sturdy tripod, lens-cleaning kit, warm waterproof clothing and sturdy footwear. Filters are useful, but I have a spare set available to borrow.
If you are not fully familiar with your camera, bring the manual or download it to your phone before travelling. Do not rely on having an internet connection while we are out.
Weather, access and safety
November in the Peak District can mean rain, wind, mud and rapidly changing light. Some locations include unmade paths, short steep gradients and exposed viewpoints. Suitable waterproof clothing and grippy footwear are essential. Locations will be adjusted when conditions require it, and safety always comes before a photograph.
The full booking and cancellation terms are available on the Workshop Information page.
11–16 January 2027 · Five nights · Maximum four photographers · £1,095 per person
A new small-group Norfolk residential, built around the locations I know best.
After more than a decade of running photography workshops in Norfolk, one request has come up again and again: can we photograph both the coast and the Broads in the same trip? This new winter residential brings the two together, with sunrise shoots along the east coast, sunset sessions around the Broads, and proper time between locations for editing, image review and fine-art printing.
We’ll be based in a private house around Caister and Great Yarmouth. That keeps us close to a wide choice of coastal subjects while giving us straightforward access to the Broads and its windmills.
WHAT WE MAY PHOTOGRAPH
Possible coastal locations include Lowestoft’s old jetty, Caister’s sea defences, Sea Palling and other quieter stretches of the Norfolk and Suffolk coast. Evening sessions may take us to windmills and waterside locations around the Broads, with one coastal sunset included when the conditions suit it.
The exact locations and running order will be chosen around the weather, tides, access and the best available light. That flexibility is important: this is a working landscape photography workshop, not a fixed sightseeing itinerary.
HOW THE WEEK WILL WORK
Monday: arrive and settle into the accommodation, followed by an introductory session and our first sunset shoot.
Tuesday to Friday: sunrise photography on the coast, a relaxed break for breakfast and rest, then guided editing, image review or printing before heading out again for the evening light.
Saturday: a final sunrise if conditions make it worthwhile, followed by breakfast, a closing image review and printing session. We’ll finish around lunchtime.
The winter days are deliberately short enough to make this rhythm practical. You will still have time to warm up, eat and rest rather than being expected to shoot continuously from dawn until dusk.
EDITING AND FINE-ART PRINTING
This is more than a location tour. We’ll take selected photographs through the complete process from capture to finished print.
I’ll help you refine your raw files, make considered editing decisions, prepare images for print and compare how photographs respond to different paper surfaces. As a PermaJet ambassador, I’ll have a selection of PermaJet photographic and fine-art papers available so you can see how paper choice changes an image's character.
FOOD
Breakfasts, packed lunches, evening meals, tea, coffee, water and snacks are included. Meals will be arranged around the photography schedule using the accommodation and local cafés, pubs or other food providers. One planned pub meal may include the Ferry Inn at Stokesby when the itinerary and opening hours allow. Alcoholic drinks are not included.
I’ll contact everyone before the trip to collect dietary requirements. Please get in touch with me before booking if you have a severe allergy or a requirement that may need specialist preparation, so I can confirm what can be accommodated safely.

WHAT TO BRING
Bring your camera, lenses, a sturdy tripod, spare batteries, memory cards and any filters you already use. A laptop with your preferred editing software is strongly recommended for the editing and printing sessions.
If you are not completely familiar with your camera, bring the manual or download it to your phone before travelling. Some locations have unreliable mobile coverage, so please do not rely on being able to access it online.
