North Devon & North Cornwall Photography Workshop - Feb 2027

Five days, just four guests, one van, and the wild Atlantic coast where North Devon meets North Cornwall in the depths of winter.

This is a residential landscape photography workshop exploring one of the UK's most dramatic stretches of coastline, rugged cliffs, sea stacks, folded rock formations and wild, wave-battered beaches, right where North Devon rolls into North Cornwall. Based around Bude, we're perfectly placed to work both sides of the border across the five days.

February on the Atlantic coast means big skies, low winter light and properly powerful seas. It's not a gentle stroll on a summer's evening; it's the real thing, and that's exactly what makes the photographs special.

Just 4 places, and here's why

I keep these trips deliberately small. Four guests means everyone gets proper, personal attention, nobody's jostling for space at the good spots, and, practically, you all fit in my van, so I can chauffeur you from location to location for the entire workshop. The van's kitted out too; there's 240V mains power on board, so if your batteries start running low through the day you can top them straight back up, which is a real lifesaver for drone batteries especially, and I've got a camping stove in the back for tea and coffee, so there's always a hot brew on the go between shoots. No convoy, no getting lost, no white-knuckle drives down unfamiliar coastal lanes before dawn. You turn up, hop in, and shoot.

Who this trip is for

This one's a step up from my day workshops. It's for photographers who've got the basics under their belt, a working understanding of the exposure triangle (aperture, shutter speed and ISO) and how to shoot in manual. If you're comfortable there, you're ready. Everything beyond that, composition, filters, long exposures, reading the conditions, editing back at base, is exactly what we'll build on together over the five days.

Where we'll shoot

This coastline offers some of the most dramatic seascape photography in the country. Expect rugged cliffs, wave-worn rock formations, sea stacks, stormy beaches, lighthouses and huge Atlantic skies. Over the five days we'll explore a mix of well-known and quieter spots, likely locations include Hartland Quay, Bedruthan Steps, Trevose Head Lighthouse, Widemouth Bay, Sandymouth Bay, Duckpool, Crackington Haven and Boscastle, depending on conditions.

February is a genuinely fantastic time for coastal photography: low winter light, dramatic weather, far fewer people around, and the real chance of powerful, atmospheric seas. As always, exact locations are chosen around the weather, tides, wind direction and safety, not a fixed plan.

A typical day

• Monday: Arrive and check in, head out for a sunset shoot, then a dinner outing together.

• Tuesday to Thursday: Up for sunrise, shooting through the day, back for breakfast or a stop en route depending on conditions, then out again through to sunset. Evenings are spent back at the accommodation, with the chance for a relaxed bit of editing if you fancy it, nothing formal, just going through your shots with a brew in hand.

• Friday: One last sunrise shoot, then check out and head home.

Sunrise to sunset, we'll chase the light, but at a friendly, unhurried pace, with plenty of time to actually take it all in.

Where you'll stay

You'll have your own private room in well-located accommodation, chosen to give us good access to both the North Devon and North Cornwall coastlines, so we're never far from the next shoot. A light breakfast is provided each morning: cereal, toast, orange juice, tea and coffee, to set you up before a sunrise start. Lunches and dinners aren't included, which keeps the price down and the days flexible. Most evenings we'll eat back at the accommodation to keep things relaxed and costs sensible, or head out if the group fancies it, we decide as we go.

Sharing? Two of you travelling together can book straight in using the Twin room option at checkout, no need to email.

Getting there, the easy bit

Coming from Norfolk? You've got two easy options: meet at mine and leave your car, or I'll arrange transport from Norwich to the accommodation and back. Either way, during the main workshop days, Tuesday to Thursday, you're chauffeured between locations in my van, with fuel included, so there's no need to drive yourself unless you'd rather. It genuinely takes the stress out of the whole thing: no long solo drive to somewhere unfamiliar, no navigating dark coastal lanes before dawn. Prefer to make your own way and meet us there? That's absolutely fine too, and you're still welcome to travel with the group throughout the workshop days.

A bit about me

I'm a full-time landscape photographer based in Norfolk, with a BA and a Master's degree in photography, and I've been running workshops since 2013. I'm a proud ambassador for five photography brands, I've won and been shortlisted for several awards, and my images have featured in publications and exhibitions. But honestly, what people tend to remember from these trips isn't the CV; it's the relaxed, no-pressure, no-egos atmosphere, and coming home with photographs they're genuinely proud of.

What about the weather?

Let's be honest, it's the Atlantic coast in February, and the weather will play its part. That's the point. Wild seas, dramatic skies and fast-changing, atmospheric conditions are exactly what make these images special, and we'll get out and make the most of them. The coastline here is long, so there's always another spot if one isn't working, with locations chosen around the weather, tides and wind direction as we go. Safety always comes first, with dynamic risk assessments throughout.

Fitness & what to expect

You'll want to be generally fit; the furthest walk from the van is around 40 minutes. Some locations involve uneven coastal paths, beaches, rocky terrain, cliff-top areas and exposed spots, so sturdy footwear and proper all-weather clothing are essential.
