Northumberland is made for landscape photography: long beaches, tidal islands, fishing villages, rugged headlands and castles rising straight out of the coast. This five-day residential workshop gives us time to work with changing tides, weather and light instead of racing through a fixed checklist of locations.
I keep these trips deliberately small. With only four guests, everyone gets proper tuition and enough room to work. I will take care of the driving between locations in my van and adapt the plan around the most promising conditions, leaving you free to concentrate on your photography.
The final itinerary will depend on the weather, tides and access conditions, but likely locations include:
Bamburgh Beach and Bamburgh Castle
Craster, Embleton Bay and views towards Dunstanburgh Castle
Holy Island and Lindisfarne when the safe causeway times suit the light
Howick and the rocky coastline around Rumbling Kern
Alnmouth and its tidal estuary
an inland viewpoint towards the Cheviot Hills when the conditions favour it
These are possibilities rather than a rigid promise. The advantage of a small residential trip is that we can go where the light and weather are working best.
Monday: Travel north, arrive during the afternoon, settle into the accommodation and head out for our first evening shoot.
Tuesday to Thursday: Sunrise, coastal and landscape sessions planned around the tides and forecast, with breaks for breakfast and food. On whichever of these days best suits the weather, we will spend roughly half a day back at the accommodation editing and making prints before heading out again for the later light.
Friday: A final early session, breakfast, check-out and the journey home.
This is a working outline rather than a timetable that forces us to stay in the wrong place when the best light is happening somewhere else.
I am proud to be a PermaJet Brand Ambassador. Printing became an important part of my own practice while I was studying photography in 2013, and I still think it is the final, too-often-overlooked stage of making a photograph. There is something completely different about seeing an image become a physical print rather than leaving it on a screen.
During our half-day session we will select and edit photographs from the trip, look at colour, soft proofing and print preparation, and compare how surface, texture and paper tone can change the feel of an image. I will bring a selection of PermaJet photographic and fine-art papers so we can make informed choices rather than simply printing everything on the same stock.
The session will be practical and relaxed, with time to ask questions and compare approaches. We will aim for everyone to leave with a finished print made during the workshop.
We will stay together in a comfortable private house positioned to give us sensible access to the coast. Every guest will have their own private bedroom.
A light breakfast is included each morning: cereal, toast and jam, orange juice, tea and coffee. Lunches, evening meals, snacks and drinks are not included, which keeps the trip flexible. We can cook at the accommodation or eat out depending on the day's plan and what the group prefers.
If you are travelling from Norfolk, you are welcome to leave your car at my Norwich address, where there is ample parking, and travel with me in the van to Northumberland and back again. I will also drive the group between workshop locations throughout the trip.
This is an optional part of the workshop. If you would rather make your own way to the accommodation or use your own vehicle during the trip, that is absolutely fine. The exact Norwich meeting address and departure details will be sent privately to booked guests.
This trip is best suited to photographers who are already comfortable with the basic relationship between aperture, shutter speed and ISO. You do not need to be an expert. I will be beside you throughout the workshop to help with composition, exposure, filters, long exposures and responding to difficult conditions.
Some locations involve walking over sand, dunes, grass and uneven coastal paths while carrying equipment. The Craster approach towards Dunstanburgh is approximately 1.3 miles each way. The exact route and pace will be adapted sensibly, but guests should be comfortable with this general level of activity.
