Norfolk Mills and Pumps: Sunset & Lightroom | 27 February 2027
Norfolk Mills and Pumps: Sunset & Lightroom | 27 February 2027
From sunset to the finished photograph
Join me for something a little different as we spend an afternoon photographing one of the Norfolk Broads’ characterful mills or wind pumps, followed by dinner together and an evening learning how to get the very best out of our photographs using Adobe Lightroom.
This workshop is aimed at photographers who are already comfortable using their cameras and have started exploring Lightroom, but would like to take their landscape editing to the next level.
We'll work through the complete process together, from capturing our photographs in the field to making selective adjustments, working with masks, improving colour and contrast, removing distractions and finally exporting the finished images.
And because we'll all be editing photographs we've taken that same afternoon, it'll be a great opportunity to see how different people approach the same subject.
At a glance
Date: Saturday 27 February 2027
Time: 15:30–approximately 21:00 GMT
Duration: Approximately 5½ hours, including photography, travel between venues, dinner and editing
Location: Norfolk Broads, at one mill or wind pump location to be confirmed
Format: Sunset landscape photography, pub dinner and Lightroom editing
Experience: Intermediate photographers, comfortable with their cameras and with some previous Lightroom experience
Laptop and software: Bring your own MacBook or Windows laptop with Adobe Lightroom installed and an active subscription. You’ll be editing your own photographs, so bring your charger and a card reader or cable to import them. Power will be available.
Dinner: A main meal and one drink included in the workshop price
Group: Maximum five paying photographers
Price: £125 per person
Part one — Photographing Norfolk’s mills and pumps at sunset
We'll meet at 15:30 for a relaxed introduction, then set up our cameras and explore the different compositions around our chosen mill or wind pump.
We'll explore how to use the structure, water, reeds, and surrounding Broads landscape to create interesting photographs, making the most of the changing light as we head towards sunset.
I'll help with camera settings, composition, filters and exposure, but we'll also start thinking about how we might approach the images later in Lightroom.
We’ll spend around two hours photographing at this one location as we work towards sunset. The light and weather will shape what we photograph; a colourful sunset is never guaranteed.
Part two — Dinner and a look through our photographs
Once we've packed our cameras away, we'll head to a local pub for a well-earned meal together.
A main meal and a drink are included in the workshop price. We’ll aim to choose our meals beforehand so we can make the most of our time together. Allow around an hour for dinner and looking through our photographs, with approximately 30 minutes beforehand to pack up and travel.
While we're relaxing over dinner, we'll have a chance to download and back up our photographs, start looking through what we've captured and talk about which images we'd like to work on.
It's always interesting seeing how several photographers can photograph the same place and come home with completely different results.
And of course, it's a good excuse for a bit of a chinwag before we get stuck into the editing!
Part three — Taking your Lightroom editing to the next level
After dinner, we’ll settle into a private space for around two hours of practical Lightroom editing, finishing at approximately 21:00.
This isn't an introduction to Lightroom from scratch. It's designed for people who've already started editing their photographs but want to develop a better understanding of the more advanced tools and how to use them effectively.
We'll work through the process using the photographs we've taken that afternoon.
Some of the techniques we'll explore include:
Selecting and preparing our strongest photographs.
Getting the overall exposure, contrast and white balance right.
Understanding the histogram and balancing highlights and shadows.
Using Lightroom's masking tools to make selective adjustments.
Working with luminance range masks to target particular tones.
Combining and refining masks for more precise local adjustments.
Improving skies, foregrounds, colours and textures.
Using the Remove and Healing tools to eliminate distractions.
Sharpening, noise reduction and finishing touches.
Exporting our final photographs for different uses.
I'll explain what I'm doing to my own image shot on the same afternoon as you, and why, rather than just telling everyone which sliders to move.
You'll be editing your own photographs, with plenty of individual help throughout.
There isn't one correct way to edit a landscape. What I want is for you to understand the tools well enough to develop your own approach and produce photographs you're happy with.
What you'll come away with
By the end of the evening, the aim is for everyone to have taken at least one photograph from the afternoon right through to a finished digital image.
More importantly, you'll have a better understanding of how to use Lightroom's masking and adjustment tools, and a workflow you can take home and apply to your future photography.
There's no printing involved in this workshop. We'll concentrate entirely on editing and exporting our finished digital photographs.
What to bring
For the photography session, bring your camera, a suitable selection of lenses, a sturdy tripod, spare batteries, memory cards and any filters you normally use.
For the editing session, you'll need your own Mac or Windows laptop with a working, activated version of Adobe Lightroom and your own active subscription. Bring your charger and a memory card reader or a suitable cable so you can import photographs from your camera. Power will be available.
Please make sure your software is working before arriving so we can spend the evening editing rather than sorting out installations.
Warm clothing and suitable footwear are important for the outdoor session, particularly in February.
What's included
Guided sunset landscape photography on the Norfolk Broads.
Practical help with camera settings, filters and composition.
A main meal and one drink at a local pub.
A Lightroom editing session in a private room.
Demonstrations of more advanced Lightroom techniques.
Individual help editing your own photographs.
Guidance on exporting your finished digital images.
What's not included
Travel to and from the workshop, your camera equipment, laptop, Adobe Lightroom subscription and additional food or drinks beyond the included meal are not included.
