Long-exposure photography on the Norfolk coast
Spend the afternoon photographing the Norfolk coast before working through the changing light towards sunset. Moving water, waves, groynes and sea defences provide strong subjects for learning how long exposure can simplify a scene and create a sense of movement.
Exact locations will be chosen nearer the date around the weather, tides, light and safe access. This flexible approach gives us a better chance of finding conditions that suit both long-exposure technique and strong coastal compositions.
Who this workshop is for
The workshop is open to all abilities. Beginners will receive clear practical help with settings, focusing and exposure, while experienced photographers can refine filter choices, shutter speeds and composition in a small group.
What we will photograph
Waves and moving water along the Norfolk coast
Groynes, sea defences and shoreline structures
Minimal and long-exposure coastal compositions
The changing colour and contrast leading into sunset
What you will learn
Selecting shutter speeds to control how movement appears
Calculating and refining long exposures
Focusing accurately and keeping the camera stable
Using neutral-density and graduated filters
Building balanced compositions around coastal features
How the workshop works
We will work at one or more coastal locations from mid-afternoon until sunset. The small group provides approximately five hours of practical tuition, with individual support and time to experiment with different exposures and compositions.
Travel between locations
You will need your own vehicle to reach the meeting point and move between locations if the conditions require it. Travel and parking costs are not included. Final meeting information will be emailed before the workshop.

A maximum group of five photographers
Locations selected around the expected weather, tides, light and access
What to bring
Your camera, charged batteries and memory cards
A wide-angle or standard landscape lens
A sturdy tripod
Neutral-density and graduated filters if you have them; they are useful but not required
Warm, waterproof clothing and sturdy footwear with good grip
A lens cloth and protection from sea spray
Weather, tides and safety
Coastal conditions can change quickly, so the location or plan may be adjusted for the weather, tides and safe access. Please follow all guidance on the day and never enter moving water to reach a composition.
About your guide
I am Dibs McCallum, a commercial photographer since 2011 with a Master's degree in Photography. I will help you understand the technical process behind long exposure and use it purposefully rather than as an effect for its own sake.
