Night Bunkers | 17 April 2027

Come out with me for an evening exploring historic military structures through light, colour and shadow. My Night Bunkers project is the starting point: taking time with a structure, finding a composition and seeing how controlled artificial light can change its atmosphere.

Date: Saturday 17 April 2027
Time: 19:00–22:30 BST
Duration: 3½ hours, including briefing, practice and safe pack-up
Group: up to five photographers
Price: £95
Location: to be confirmed

What we’ll photograph

We’ll look at architectural form, surface texture and the relationship between a structure and its surroundings. Rather than light everything evenly, we’ll experiment with where light falls, where we leave shadows and how those choices affect the photograph.

The photographs in my existing project show the kind of atmosphere I enjoy working with. They’re creative references, not a promise that we’ll visit those same structures. The actual location needs to be agreed for safe, lawful group access.

What you’ll learn

We’ll explore continuous lighting, off-camera flash and coloured gels alongside longer exposures, comparing the effect of changing direction, colour and intensity. Where there’s still natural light, we’ll look at how to balance it with the light we add.

I’ll help with composition, focusing as the light fades and making deliberate exposure choices. We’ll take photographs, look at the results and adjust the lighting together, drawing on my own experience photographing these subjects. There’s no model: the structures and the light are our subjects.

How the session works

We’ll start with a briefing and a look at the permitted shooting positions while there’s still some natural light. As conditions allow, we’ll move into practical lighting experiments, coordinating exposures and light placement so we can work together without interrupting one another’s photographs.

There’ll be time to try different compositions, compare results and get individual help. We’ll finish with enough time to pack away and leave safely by 22:30. The final timetable depends on the chosen site, suitable darkness and the permitted access window.

Who it suits

This workshop suits photographers who are comfortable with basic manual exposure and using a tripod, and would like to explore creative lighting after dark. You don’t need previous light-painting experience. I’ll adapt the help to your camera and experience.

What’s included

The plan includes practical tuition, lighting demonstrations, individual support and image review during the session. The final shared lighting kit and compatibility arrangements will be confirmed once the site is agreed; a separate setup for every photographer isn’t promised.

What to bring

Bring your camera with manual and long-exposure controls, a sturdy tripod, suitable lenses, charged batteries and memory cards. A remote release is useful. Wear warm, weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear, and bring a torch for safe movement. Let me know your camera make and model beforehand so we can check the planned trigger arrangements.

What isn’t included

Travel, parking, food, refreshments and personal equipment purchases aren’t included. No separate site charge for attendees is being proposed.

Weather, access and meeting point

The location, permissions and route are still to be agreed. We’ll only use authorised areas and safe shooting positions; this workshop won’t involve unauthorised entry or exploring unsafe structures. Ground conditions, parking, movement after dark and any restrictions on historic structures will shape the final plan.

Please contact me before booking if you’d like to discuss access needs. I’ll email the exact meeting point and joining information two to three days before the workshop. If you need an approximate location earlier for travel arrangements, please get in touch. Any weather-related changes or cancellation will follow the existing workshop terms.

Booking information

Once you've booked and received your payment confirmation email, your place on the workshop is confirmed.

I'll then email you the full joining information, including the exact meeting point and any final instructions, two to three days before the workshop takes place.

If you're travelling from further away and need to arrange accommodation or plan your journey, please feel free to email me beforehand. I'll happily provide an approximate location so you can make your arrangements.

Please take a moment to read my workshop booking and cancellation information before booking.
