London Thames Photography Workshop – 12 February 2027
London Thames Photography Workshop
Date: Friday 12th February 2027
Time: 2 pm–7 pm
Price: £90 per person
Group size: Maximum 10 photographers
Fitness level: Moderate
Expect approximately four to five miles of predominantly level walking. We’ll be on our feet for much of the workshop, with opportunities to rest while photographing and during the river-boat journey.
Photograph London from daylight into the night
Join me for a five-hour photography workshop following the River Thames from the modern architecture of North Greenwich to some of central London’s most recognisable views.
We’ll begin at The O2, then follow the Thames toward the Thames Barrier. From there, we’ll continue to Woolwich and take a river boat into central London, giving us a completely different view of the capital.
We’ll arrive in central London for the evening light and sunset before continuing through blue hour and into darkness. This allows us to photograph architecture, urban landscapes, reflections and illuminated landmarks in several very different lighting conditions.
Meeting point
We’ll meet at Costa Coffee inside The O2 at North Greenwich.
The O2 is immediately beside North Greenwich Underground station on the Jubilee line. Please arrive in enough time to be ready to leave promptly at 2 pm.
Full meeting instructions and my contact number will be emailed to everyone before the workshop.
Planned route
Our intended route includes:
The Greenwich Peninsula and its modern riverside architecture
The Thames Barrier
A river-boat journey from Woolwich into central London
The Shard, Tower Bridge and the surrounding riverside around sunset
Blue-hour and night photography along the South Bank
Millennium Bridge and views towards St Paul’s Cathedral
Reflections, illuminated architecture and passing traffic
We expect to finish near a convenient Underground or mainline station, most likely around Waterloo, Blackfriars or London Bridge.
The precise route may change around the weather, river-boat timetable, access and the most promising available light.
Photography throughout the session
The workshop will offer opportunities to photograph:
Urban landscapes
Modern and historic architecture
Street scenes
Sunset and blue hour
Reflections and illuminated buildings
Long exposures and light trails
London’s skyline and riverside landmarks
Views featuring the Shard, Tower Bridge and St Paul’s Cathedral
Tuition and guidance
I’ll be photographing alongside the group throughout the session rather than simply leading you between locations.
I’ll talk through the compositions I’m considering, explain why I’m making particular decisions and show you the settings and results on my own camera. You’re welcome to watch how I approach each location, ask as many questions as you like or work more independently.
I can also help directly with your camera, show you where to find particular settings and talk you through making the photograph yourself.
The amount of tuition is entirely up to you. Some photographers prefer regular guidance, while others mainly want the planned route and occasional advice. Both approaches are absolutely fine.
A basic understanding of aperture, shutter speed and ISO is recommended, but you don’t need to be an expert. I can help with:
Camera settings and exposure
Composition and lens choice
Photographing architecture and urban landscapes
Long exposures and moving water
Working through sunset and blue hour
Focusing after dark
Controlling bright highlights
Reflections, light trails and illuminated buildings
What to bring
DSLR or mirrorless camera
Spare batteries and memory cards
Wide-angle lens
Standard or telephoto zoom lens
Sturdy tripod
Lens-cleaning equipment
Comfortable footwear
Warm, waterproof clothing
Food and drink
Oyster card or contactless payment card
Pack as lightly as you reasonably can because we’ll be moving between several locations.
If you’re not completely familiar with your camera, bring its manual or download it to your phone before travelling. Please don’t rely on having a reliable internet connection throughout the route.
Travel costs
River-boat, Underground and other public-transport fares are not included in the workshop price.
At the currently published fares, the river boat from Woolwich into central London costs approximately £12.40 per person using Oyster or contactless payment.
If you need to return to North Greenwich by Underground after the workshop, the additional journey is currently approximately £3.10.
Please allow approximately £16–£20 for travel during and immediately after the workshop. Fares, timetables and the final finishing station will be checked and confirmed before the workshop, as these may change before February 2027.
What is included
Five hours of guided photography
A carefully planned route through east and central London
Practical tuition and individual help
Guidance with your own camera
Demonstrations using my camera
Composition and technical advice
Sunset, blue-hour and night-photography sessions
What is not included
River-boat, Underground or other public-transport fares
Food and drinks
Travel to the meeting point or home from the finishing location
Parking and shared fuel costs

Please read the workshop booking and cancellation information before booking.
