Gunton Sunrise Seascape Photography Workshop – 23 January 2027
Date: Saturday 23 January 2027
Time: 7:00 am–11:00 am
Price: £45 per person
Group size: Maximum 10 photographers
Fitness level: Easy to moderate
Gunton Sunrise Seascape Photography Workshop
Join me for an early-morning seascape photography workshop on the coast at Gunton, just north of Lowestoft.
We’ll meet at 7:00 am, approximately 50 minutes before sunrise, giving us time to reach the beach, get set up and begin photographing during the changing pre-dawn light.
Sunrise is expected at approximately 7:49 am, with high tide predicted at around 10:03 am. This should give us a good variety of conditions as the light develops and the tide rises around Gunton’s weathered sea defences and groynes.
The beach has a wide selection of coastal structures, broken defences and foreground details to work with. Depending on the conditions, we’ll photograph waves moving around the structures, long exposures, patterns in the water and wider coastal landscapes.
From the car park, it’s around a 20-minute walk along a proper footpath to Ness Point, the most easterly point in the UK. You’re welcome to head down there to photograph sunrise before joining us at Gunton, where there will still be plenty of compositions around the old sea defences, groynes and breaking waves. I’ve included a few photographs I’ve taken there on previous visits—it’s a genuinely lovely spot and well worth exploring.
The session will remain at Gunton, allowing us to concentrate on the changing light and tide without losing time travelling between locations.
What we’ll cover
During the workshop, I can help with:
Camera settings and exposure
Composing coastal landscapes
Using shutter speed creatively
Photographing moving water
Long-exposure techniques
Using neutral-density and graduated filters
Focusing in low light
Protecting highlights around sunrise
Choosing lenses and viewpoints
Keeping equipment clean around salt spray
I’ll be photographing alongside the group and explaining the compositions and camera settings I’m considering. You’re welcome to ask as many questions as you like, receive direct help with your camera or work more independently.
Breakfast break
We’ll take a short break during the session for a hot drink and breakfast at the van.
The workshop price includes:
A sausage sandwich or vegetarian equivalent
Tea or coffee
Please let me know in advance if you would like the vegetarian option or have any food allergies or dietary requirements. Although reasonable care will be taken, I cannot guarantee an allergen- or sand-free preparation environment, due to cooking on my Cadac gas stove in the van.
What to bring
DSLR or mirrorless camera
Wide-angle or standard zoom lens
Sturdy tripod
Filters, if you have them
Spare batteries and memory cards
Cup or mug
Deck chair or something to sit on and have a chinwag for a bit
Lens cloths and cleaning equipment
Warm, waterproof clothing
Gloves and a hat
Waterproof boots or sturdy footwear
The beach will require suitable footwear; I have found over the years that people tend to prefer to wear comfy wellies such as Muck Boots, ROCKFISH or similar brands.
If you’re unfamiliar with your camera, bring its manual or download it to your phone before travelling. Please don’t rely on having a reliable internet connection at the location.
Weather, tides and safety
The exact shooting positions will depend on the weather, sea conditions and the behaviour of the tide on the morning.
We’ll maintain a safe distance from the water and won’t climb onto unstable sea defences or place ourselves where waves could cut off the route back along the beach.
If conditions make the planned area unsafe, the session may be adjusted, relocated or postponed.
Meeting information
The precise meeting point, parking information and my contact number will be emailed to everyone before the workshop.
Booking
The price is £45 per person, including the four-hour photography session, individual guidance, a breakfast sandwich and a hot drink.
Places are limited to ten photographers.
Book online to secure your place. Please read the workshop booking and cancellation information before booking.
