Creative Portraits in Norfolk’s Historic Outdoors | 30 January 2027
Creative Portraits in Norfolk’s Historic Outdoors
Join me for an afternoon of creative portraits, interesting surroundings and a bit of experimentation with light. We’ll spend around three hours working with a model in a historic Norfolk setting, exploring how a small change in lighting, background or viewpoint can make a very different photograph. With no more than five photographers, there’ll be time to try your own ideas and get individual help along the way.
Date: Saturday 30 January 2027
Provisional time: 12:00–15:00
Duration: 3 hours, including demonstrations, practice, breaks and review
Group: maximum five paying photographers
Price: £125 per photographer
Location: Norfolk — venue to be confirmed via email a few days prior
What we’ll photograph
We’ll use the architecture and atmosphere of our surroundings to make portraits with a sense of place. That might mean including a doorway or textured wall in a wider composition, or moving closer and letting the light and the model’s expression do more of the work.
My usual starting point is one off-camera flash with a light modifier. Depending on the conditions and the photograph we’re working towards, I may add a second light for fill or use a reflector. You don’t need a complicated setup or loads of expensive equipment to make striking portraits.
What you’ll learn
We’ll look at balancing flash with the available light, positioning the key light and changing its direction to see how it shapes the face. I’ll show you how modifiers affect the shadows and how flash triggers let us move the light away from the camera.
We’ll experiment with lighting ratios — the balance between the main light and the light filling the shadows — and try different backgrounds and compositions. Working with the model is part of that too: we’ll talk through posing and direction, then look at what a small adjustment brings to the photograph.
How the session works
We’ll start with a quick introduction and a lighting demonstration, then take turns working with the model. You’ll have time to make a photograph, look at the result and try something different, with individual help throughout.
We’ll work through different lighting arrangements and compositions, with breaks for the model and time to review photographs and chat through questions. The lighting will be shared, so everyone can learn from the demonstrations as well as their own shooting time.
Who it suits
This workshop suits photographers who are starting to explore manual exposure and would like to become more confident with portrait lighting. You don’t need previous off-camera flash experience. If you already use flash, there’ll be room to experiment and develop your ideas too. I’ll adapt the help to your camera and experience.
What’s included
Three hours of practical tuition, lighting demonstrations, individual help and image review within the session. An experienced model is planned for the workshop, subject to final agreement.
I’ll provide lighting equipment, modifiers and triggering equipment for the planned demonstrations and supervised use, subject to final kit confirmation. We’ll check compatibility beforehand; each photographer won’t need their own lighting setup.
What isn’t included
Travel to the meeting point, parking, personal travel expenses and equipment purchases aren’t included. Food and refreshments aren’t included unless I confirm otherwise.
What to bring
Bring a camera with manual controls, a suitable portrait or general-purpose lens, charged batteries and memory cards. Wear warm clothing and footwear suitable for the confirmed location.
You’re very welcome to bring your own flashguns, triggers, modifiers or reflectors if you’d like to practise with familiar equipment. There’s no need to buy an expensive lighting system to take part. Please let me know your camera make and model, and any lighting equipment you’d like to use, so we can check compatibility with the planned setup beforehand.
Weather, access and meeting point
We’ll be using a variety of locations, allowing us to shoot both indoors and outdoors and make the most of the surroundings and conditions.
I’ll email you the location information, exact meeting point and any final instructions two to three days before the workshop. If you need an update sooner to help plan your journey, you’re welcome to get in touch.
Please contact me before booking if you’d like to discuss access needs. We can talk through the locations and any steps, walking or other practical considerations.
About your tutor
I’m Dibs, a Norfolk-based commercial photographer with a Master’s degree in Photography. I’ve worked commercially since 2011. My teaching is practical and personal: we’ll work through decisions at the camera, with room to ask questions and try things for yourself.
Booking information
Once your payment has gone through successfully and you’ve received your confirmation email, your place on the workshop is confirmed.
I’ll email you the full joining information, including the exact meeting point and any final instructions, two to three days before the workshop takes place.
If you’re travelling from further away and need to arrange accommodation or plan your journey, please feel free to email me beforehand. I’ll happily provide an approximate location so you can make your arrangements.
