Cantley Sugar Beet Factory is one of Norfolk’s most atmospheric industrial subjects after dark. When the factory is active, steam, glowing windows and bright working lights create a striking contrast with the quieter Broads landscape surrounding it.
British Sugar has proposed ending beet processing at Cantley by the end of February 2027, so this winter could be your last chance to photograph the factory at night.
This is a relaxed, guided photo walk rather than a formal classroom workshop. We’ll photograph together from surrounding public areas, with help available throughout for low-light settings, composition and long exposures.
Possible subjects include the illuminated factory, steam catching the light, reflections on the water, silhouettes, glowing windows, night skies and the wider industrial landscape. This is not a factory-access workshop and we will not enter private land.
We’ll look at exposure, white balance, focusing in the dark, working safely with a tripod and controlling very bright highlights without losing the atmosphere of the scene. I’ll also help with reflections, long exposures and simplifying a busy industrial composition.
We’ll meet near Cantley and take a slow walk between viewpoints on public land. The session starts at 7pm and finishes around 9:30pm, although we may stay a little longer when the conditions are particularly good. Final meeting details will be sent to booked guests before the walk.
• Around two and a half hours of guided night photography
• Practical help with settings, focusing, composition and long exposures
• A relaxed, social photo walk with other photographers
Bring a DSLR or mirrorless camera, charged batteries, spare batteries, memory cards, a useful range of lenses, a sturdy tripod, remote shutter release or camera timer, lens-cleaning kit, camera bag, a head torch or small torch, warm outdoor clothing, sturdy footwear, waterproofs or an umbrella and a way to pay for parking if needed. Filters are optional for this session.

This is an outdoor night walk near water, roads and working industrial surroundings. The route may change around access, activity and weather. Please wear suitable footwear, bring a torch and take care when using a tripod in the dark.
I am a full-time photographer based in Norfolk. I have worked commercially since 2011, hold a BA and a Master’s degree in Photography, and have been running photography workshops since 2013. My sessions are practical, sociable and free of ego, with help available whenever you need it.
